A 29-year-old police officer in Livingstone District, Southern Province, has been arrested and charged with receiving money by false pretences.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Constable Imangolwa Chibunda had been deceiving unsuspecting individuals both on and off duty by falsely claiming to possess significant influence.
Southern Province Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka, confirmed Chibunda’s arrest, stating that he remains in custody at Livingstone Central Police Station.
“Between March 2025 and October 17, 2025, Livingstone Central Police Station received a series of reports from members of the public alleging that they had been swindled out of money by Constable Imangolwa Chibunda aged 29, a police officer at the same station,” Daka said.
Chibunda allegedly promised to secure employment opportunities for victims or their relatives and to facilitate the release of detained suspects in exchange for money.
The victims reported that once payments were made, the officer would begin avoiding them and eventually disappear.
“The following individuals have since lodged formal complaints at Livingstone Central Police Station, citing various amounts lost: Emeldah Mutema – K11,500, Simon Zulu – K1,500, Euphenia Sipunu – K2,000, Joselyn Banda Habeenzu – K360, John Kazala – K250, and Eunice Grende – K1,800,” Daka said.
He said that after the reports were filed, Chibunda stopped reporting for work and was not found at his home.
