Today marks precisely 5 months down the line since the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, yet he has not been laid to rest due to a legal dispute between the government and the late President’s family over his final resting place.
The Lungu family, through spokesperson Makebi Zulu, recently announced that they are ready to repatriate the remains of Mr. Lungu back to Zambia only if President Hakainde Hichilema publicly declares he will stay away from the funeral and delegates Vice President Mutale Nalumango.
As it stands, negotiations between the two parties have stalled, as the matter is before the Supreme Court of South Africa.
Meanwhile, republican President Hakainde Hichilema has on several occasions maintained that the government will continue engaging with the family to ensure Mr. Lungu is buried at Embassy Park in Lusaka.
