TWO train drivers have died after two locomotives which were being taken for repair derailed. Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) head of public relations, Conrad Simuchile said in a statement that the incident occurred today, Monday, April 21, 2025, at around 03:00 hours at Bridge Number 262, situated in Mbozi District, Songwe Region, Tanzania. “The two locomotives, which were defective and travelling light without cargo from Chozi in Zambia to the Mbeya workshop in Tanzania for repairs, unfortunately derailed and capsized at the bridge,” he said. He said emergency responders, including police and fire services, arrived at the scene swiftly after receiving information about the accident. Mr Simuchile said, tragically, both drivers were found deceased at the scene, having succumbed to injuries sustained from the severe impact of the derailment. “The loss of lives is deeply regretted. Both governments and the respective families have been informed. TAZARA extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time,” he said. He added that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.
