Police in Chinsali have detained 74 students from Kapasa Makasa University for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
According to the Zambia Police Service via a statement, the group includes 46 male and 28 female students who were arrested on Tuesday, October 27, 2025, after they protested against a new degree classification system based on Grade Point Average (GPA).
A GPA is a way of measuring a student’s overall performance in all subjects.
It shows the average of the marks or grades a student has earned.
Police say the students engaged in disorderly behavior within and around the university premises, disturbing peace and safety on campus and in the surrounding community.
The students are being held in lawful custody and will be charged with Conduct Likely to Cause a Breach of Peace under the Laws of Zambia.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has since reminded the public that while expressing grievances is allowed, it must be done peacefully and within the law.
