National Assembly Speaker Nelly Mutti has urged Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu to maintain the dignity and decorum expected of a lawmaker and respect the Speaker’s Office authority.
This comes after Mr. Mpundu was suspended from Parliament for 30 days over comments deemed contemptuous of the Speaker’s Office. The suspension follows a separate 14-day suspension for using unparliamentary language.
Speaker Mutti ruled that Mr. Mpundu’s statements seriously undermined the House’s integrity. The suspensions stem from remarks made on a podcast where Mr. Mpundu allegedly described Parliament as “useless.”
The decision to suspend Mr. Mpundu was supported by 67% of Members of Parliament, while 28% voted against.
Both suspensions will run concurrently.
