Police in Chipata have finally arrested Constable Emmanuel Tembo, the officer who fled with K622,483 from a Lusaka bank while on guard duty, ending an eight-month manhunt.
Eastern Province Police Commanding officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed that Constable Tembo was apprehended in Ncheka area on May 5, 2026.
The arrest closes a case that began on September 15, 2025, when Constable Tembo armed with an AK47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds deceitfully entered the bank’s bulk room after closing hours, grabbed a sealed cash bag and bolted.
He later abandoned his uniform, firearm and ammunition in Shimabala area, surrendering them through a taxi driver before disappearing.
Mr. Mweemba has warned officers that it will not allow lawlessness by officers who are entrusted with the responsibility to protect property.
Constable Tembo is currently in custody in Chipata and is expected to be transferred to Lusaka to face charges of theft and related offenses.
